These are the words my father shared with me when I asked him what I would do without him. He was more than a father; he was my best friend, my unwavering cheerleader, and my rock. Every day, every moment, I live by those words.

A Heart of Compassion:

Welcoming the Pharmacist

Only my Dad would know that his local pharmacist had nowhere to go on Thanksgiving. When my cousin arrived at my parents house for Thanksgiving dinner, she asked, “Who is that?” I said, “that is my father’s pharmacist”. Without a pause she laughed and said, “of course it is!” The compassion that my Dad extended to those around him knew no bounds, and his actions spoke louder than words.

A Legacy of Kindness and Brownies

Not a day went by that my Mom did not make someone’s day brighter. One of her many acts of love was baking the most delicious brownies. Even if we weren’t home, Mom’s brownies greeted anyone who walked through our door. In her honor, we are committed to doing an act of kindness every day.

Dulce, a hardworking woman with a big heart, consistently endeavors to assist others, especially her daughters, her parents and her employees. She had been running her cleaning business for 10 years when her car started to have problems. Stable transportation was key to her business and her livelihood. We helped her get stable transportation so she can confidently expand her business and take care of all the people that rely on her.

Helping local artisans see so they can do detailed work

In five small rural communities in Mexico, there is a community of women artisans that make quilts, dresses and shirts, using traditional detailed stitches. Many of them are the principal financial provider for their family. As they age, they struggle to see the small details required for this traditional work. The process of getting glasses is very difficult as it requires them to travel 4 hours to see an optometrist and they would need the money to pay for one. In collaboration with Nancy Zavala and Optometrist Rocha, we donated 125 lenses, benefiting 90% women, with 60% being artisans. This initiative has not only preserved the livelihoods of these women but has also safeguarded over 75 jobs within their communities.

Becoming a nurse to support her autistic son

Atiya is a hard working single mom and a medical professional with a heart of gold. As her autistic son, Airyn, got older she needed to make more money to provide him with a stable life. She decided to go back to school and get an advanced nursing degree. She was determined to do it all – work full time, go to school and take care of Airyn. But after giving it her all, she realized that she simply did not have time and money to do it all. We were delighted to help her with her school expenses. And it was not a surprise when she graduated as valedictorian of her class!

Their approach involves offering hands-on experiential learning, enabling girls to develop the necessary skills and explore specific areas of interest in technology. Dr. Pamela Herrera, Veranda Partners Director of Operations, understands the challenges of breaking barriers to achieve high level professional success. That’s why this was a special way to give back to other girls to succeed.
